Virtue- Week Four (Self-Discipline)

Week 4- Self-Discipline

Self-Discipline: the act of disciplining one's own feelings, desires, etc., especially with the intention of improving oneself

Synonym: Temperance                Antonym: Wildness

“A man who governs his passions is master of the world. We must either command them or be enslaved by them. It is better to be a hammer than an anvil.”
- St. Dominic

How to practice this virtue:
It’s important to learn how to control your temper. Can you think of a time that you might lose your temper? How could you show self-discipline in that situation?

Restraining from something we really enjoy for 40 days during Lent is a perfect time to practice self-discipline.

  1. Another discipline might be a sport or an instrument that is being learned. If we do not control our movements we will do poorly.
In like manner the Rosary can be a wonderful self-control teacher. As mine are required to sit without fidgeting and to say the prayers clearly without mumbling, and as we are getting back to the nightly Rosary this October, it is always a good time to recall and practice self-control among other virtues that can be meditated on with a good rosary devotion book to help.
(though sometimes there is limeted time so we double duty and have a clean-up rosary where they are expected to do a chore and say the prayers - so I can hear.) I especially like to do this in the eavening when I am having trouble getting them to stay on task and settle down a bit.

  2. Ps. I am very firm on behaving at prayer time. If anyone is not doing so, I can think of many appropriate alternatives. Early bedtime, no story time, no desert, an extra writing assignment. Boys will push and push if they are not given clear limits. Probably a few girls too.
