In Italy, the title of Our Lady of Sorrows is Maria Santissima Addolorata. This devotion began in the 1200's. She is the patron of many Italian cities. In southern Italy there is La Festa della Madonna dei Sette Dolori (the festival of the Seven Sorrows of the Madonna), instituted in 1423, also called Madonna dell’Addolorata Festival. The food connected to this festival is cuccia salata, wheat berries cooked in meat broth and layered with goat or pork. (information taken from Catholic Culture)

November
Holy Souls in Purgatory

Hymn: Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones

Pray a novena for All Souls:
Say once a day for nine days, starting on 24 October until the Eve of All Souls Day (Nov. 2)

O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of thy servants and handmaids departed, the remission of all their sins; that through pious supplications they may obtain the pardon they have always desired. Who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Ideas for Home Altar
-make a Family Prayer Candle like this one
-make a Holy Souls poster as described by Under Her Starry Mantle
-or set up a display like this or this
-set out funeral Mass cards like this to remind your family who to pray for

Forming a Prayer Habit:
-Our Lord promised St. Gertrude (her feast day is celebrated on November 16) that He would release 1,000 souls from Purgatory each time the following prayer is said. Make it a new habit to start praying this every day. Perhaps as part of your morning prayers, at the end of your Rosary, or after grace:

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Celebrate the Feast of All Souls on Nov. 2nd:
-Go to Mass
-Visit a cemetery and help the poor souls receive a plenary indulgence! Jessica at Shower of Roses explains how here, along with yet another nice display to put in your house to remember to pray for deceased family and friends.

Bonus: A wonderful explanation on devotion to the Poor Souls by Fr. John Hardon.

Short Prayers and Invocations:

Requiem Aeternam dona eis, Domine
 et lux perpetua luceat eis:
Requiescant in pace. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
