Preschool & Kindergarten Art~ Week 2

Fall has arrived.
 Cooler weather is here.
It's now apple picking season here!

So this week in art, the Angels (preschool) and the Benedictines (Kindergarten) were able to work with watercolors.

The kids painted an apple tree. They had fun creating the tree, grass, and sky. When their pictures were dry, we added little red pompoms to the painting to represent the apples.

The kids loved the added pompoms. Everyone loaded up their trees with apples and some had a few on the ground.

This was a wonderful project for the kids, since we will be visiting a real apple orchard in a few weeks!

We made mice today!

Striped Mice...

Spotted Mice....

The children each received a white triangle piece of paper to decorate with paint. Some of the children used paint brushes, while others used their fingers. We then added two brown construction paper ears and a brown tail. Some of the kids cut their tail to make some legs for their mouse.

Art~Week 14

This week in art we talked about religious icons.
We viewed pictures of icons from Holy Transfiguration Church for inspiration.

Art~ Week 14 Preschool & Kindergaretn

This week in art, the little kids created a bird's nest. With all the flowers blooming and the birds singing, what better way to celebrate spring!

We used brown construction paper for the nest background. I cut out blue and yellow circles for the birds, so the kids could have a choice. I cut out a small orange triangle for the bird's beaks. We added colorful feathers for their wings and some brown crinkled paper, I found at the local craft store, for their nests.

The kids had fun creating their birds. They added eyes, legs, and some even made their birds girly by adding eyelashes. It's always fun to see what they will create.

The Book of Kells is an ancient manuscript written and illustrated by hand by monks. The book tells the four Gospels of the Holy Bible. After looking through the book and viewing the beautiful pictures, the students created their own pictures. They were encouraged to draw a picture inspired by a favorite Bible story or a favorite saint.

Preschool Art~ Week 12

This week in art, the Prek and Kindergarten students created a collage fish.

This project was super easy to do!

Supplies Needed
Paper plates
Scissors
Construction Paper, torn up into pieces
Glue Sticks
Pen

We gave each child a paper plate with the tail already cut out.
The children glued the tail to the fish, some needed help.
The children then used the glue sticks to spread glue onto the paper plates.
They stuck various paper pieces onto their fishes to make their scales.
We used a pen to make the fishes eye.

The kids had fun making their fishes.
We had plenty of Rainbow fishes swimming around the room!

Art~ Week 12

This week in art, the children made a shield depicting their own Coat of Arms!

Knights had to understand the system of badges, called Heraldry.
Each knight had their own personal badges on their shields to help identify the contestants during mock battles and real battles.
Knights would have these badges painted on their tunics, coats, armor, and shields. Their horses would be decorated with them too.

There are 5 basic colors that were used- blue, red, black, green, purple, and two metals, silver and gold.
Various patterns were used. Common animals on shields were lions, ermines, vair, serpents, eagles, and elephants.
Coat of arms were passed down from father to eldest son. They became the family badges.
They were a symbol of noble birth.

So during art class, I encouraged the children to create a coat-of-arms that reflected who they were.
I asked them to create something that their parents would immediately know that it was theirs.

Children used triangle, heart, oval, circle, and the traditional shield shape.

The goal was to introduce a new technique and a new medium to the children.
