Art~ Week 11

This week in art, the older children created a Viking ship using pencils and pens.

We talked about the effect of light on objects and how to create the effect of light and dark using shadowing.
The goal was to introduce a new technique and a new medium to the children.

Art~ Week 11 Preschool & Kindergarten

This week in art the children were able to finger paint a winter scene.
We read the story The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.

After we finished the story, the children recreated the scene when Peter and his friend goes out to play.

The children created the snow using their fingers or paint brushes. A few of the children didn't want to get their hands dirty.

Once the snow scene was completed, we glued on the pair of friends.

It was a fun project and enjoyed by all the children!

Art~ Week 10

This week in art we learned about Gargoyles.

Gargoyles of Notre-Dame de Paris

Gargoyles are often associated with the medieval time period. In fact, gargoyles have been in use since the ancient Egyptian time period.

Gargoyles were used for a variety reasons.
They were used on churches to show evil to the many followers that could not read. They were used to scare away the evil spirits from the church.
They also had a functional purpose too. They were waterspouts. They were used to drain water from the churches. It protected the stone masonry work. Numerous gargoyles were used so that the water would be divided up.
Gargoyles were made from carved stone and varied widely. Some were dragons, lions, mythical beasts, humans, devils, goats, and monkeys.
Some were scary while others were funny looking.

We can see gargoyles in Washington D.C. at the National Cathedral.

After learning about gargoyles and viewing the various carved stone creatures.
The children created their own gargoyles out of clay.
