Language Arts- Week 5

Grammar:
We reviewed the eight parts of speech, proper and common nouns, and possessive nouns, and pronouns. Then we discussed this week's grammar memorization sentence.
What is a verb?
A verb is a word that does an action, shows a state of being, links two words together, or helps another verb.
We first discussed action verbs and practiced the "Can I ___ ?" verb finder sentence. If you answer yes, the word is a verb. "Can I sing?" Yes! Sing is a verb. "Can I table?" No! Table is a noun. I then told them that a verb is something WITH A SUBJECT. Then the children copied a sentence and we circled the verb and the subject. Then I taught them the 8 state of being verbs and they learned a little cheer.
Am (clap)
Is (clap)
Are, Was, Were (clap, clap)
Be (clap)
Being (clap)
Been (clap, clap)
Ask your child to sing it for you for practice.
We will discuss linking verbs next week.
For homework:
Carmelites and Dominicans(1st-4th grade): Make a list of 10 Action Verbs. Pick one to draw a picture of.

Great Words 1:
After practicing the first 4 lines, we learned 4 more.
1. Using both hands, pretend your pulling on whiskers on your face.
2. After saying this line, howl like a dog.
3. Flap your arms like wings.
4. Put your hands over your heart.
Writing:
The Franciscans turned in their papers and I returned their Week 3 papers.
Our Style technique for this week was Strong Verbs. I have "banned" simple verbs from the class. The students glued a list of these banned verbs inside their notebooks. one point will be deducted from their paper if a banned verb is used. This will hopefully encourage them to use more exciting verbs. We also learned four more vocabulary words. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Monday.
Lastly, we made a Key Word Outline about the Plymouth Colony and Samoset.
For homework:
Study your vocabulary words. Words that will be on the quiz are:
Appalled, askew, gravity, pillar, reverently, coax, contemplate, hostile, presume, secluded, cunning, endeavor, perilous, prosperity, subside, flank, frivolous, persevere, resolve, transfixed
Write a paragraph using your Key Word Outline. Follow the checklist just like last week. The newest item listed is to add a strong verb. Monday will be our last day learning Key Word Outlines! :)
